“In the Celtic tradition, there is a beautiful understanding of love and friendship…and the idea of soul-love; the old Gaelic term for this is
anam cara.
Anam is the Gaelic word for soul and
cara is the word for friend…so
anam cara in the Celtic world was the ‘soul friend’. Excerpt by
John O’Donohue from the book Anam Cara A Book of Celtic Wisdom
I share with you this day from the book Anam Cara written by John O’Donohue. I have spent many a moon contemplating this beautiful concept of my ancestors and today yet another meaning revealed itself. The phrase was traditionally used by the early Celts to describe a relationship with a person who was a teacher, or a spiritual guide. But what if this phrase represented a relationship with oneself? What if your anam cara, soul friend, was in fact, your soul?
It was an interesting thought that became more interesting as I heard Guidance Energy say, “of course”, loudly in my left ear. They repeated what I had heard from them before, “Soul is always present and it can be accessed in an environment of mundane reality when preoccupation is not just on that one dimension of reality, but includes the realm of Divine. Many of you have some sort of a spiritual practice and in that practice find great comfort, great knowledge and great wisdom. And yet you come to a place where the burden of mundane reality pulls at you forcing you into spiritual practices to find comfort. What if you simply lived in the balance of both? What if you simply lived in the balance coming from collaboration with your soul in the first place; wouldn’t it make it easier? This would begin the process of engaging communication with your soul.”
To which I replied quickly “ perhaps calling my soul a friend, would make this communication easier…”
“Yes” they replied, “and would unite you together on its journey as soul friends. You would then see your life journey from the perspective of your soul together as one with you, regardless of the circumstances it may be initiating in your mundane reality.”
“and by mundane reality you would be referring to the real world?” I asked.
They replied “the real world, as you know, is the world of spirit, your guides and Divine. The real world is Divine Collaboration. See your soul as your friend on this journey of life you are engaging and in this know you are collaborating with Divine.”
My soul as friend. This makes something at times so intangible, the idea of soul, tangible. I hope it does the same for you…blessings to all on this day of the Celts.
